Spearmint Essential Oil

Spearmint is an antioxidant, anti-bacterial, antiseptic and traditionally has been used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as spasm, bloating, stomachache, and Sinusitis. Active ingredients in Spearmint essential oil have a significant disinfectant effect on bacteria causing oral diseases, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, and prevent the growth of these bacteria in the mouth. As regards to the point that bad smell of mouth is because of accumulation of bacteria and food debris in the mouth, the presence of aromatic substances, especially the Carvone contained in the Spearmint, can fresh the mouth. Recent researches have been also shown that using Spearmint orally is effective in improving hirsutism (growth of hair in women). The mechanism of action of Spearmint essential oil is because of anti-androgenic activity and reducing the expression of some of the enzymes that synthesize steroid hormones. Also, the active ingredients of Spearmint are antagonists of testosterone receptors in various sections of the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gland, thereby significantly reduce the free and total testosterone levels.
